How Genealogists Use Obituaries to Search Online Ancestors

Melanie Walters asked:

One of the first things genealogists or anyone searching for their ancestry should do is find clues in obituaries. Obituaries are hidden gems of information about people. They are the final report on the life of an individual and contain details about that person’s life that may not appear anywhere else. Each obituary is different, but the basic research plan outlined below can work for all of them.

What is an Obituary?

An obituary is a notice that announces the death of someone with a description of the person’s life and list of family members. An obituary is a valuable tool for genealogists and family tree researchers because it contains clues about the deceased and the deceased’s family. The obituary is often written by the funeral home or mortuary, but many people choose to write an obituary for their loved one that is published in the newspaper and included in the funeral program.

Sample Obituary for Research

A research plan for obituaries starts with an obituary. It is a little easier to start a research plan when you are related to the person in the obituary, but if you were researching someone who is not your relation, the steps would be the same.

The first step is to find the obituary. Here is a sample obituary that we can use to formulate a research plan.

Death of Jack Porter

During the past 6 weeks the farmer Jack Porter has been confined to his home, 1 mile east of Pocatello by illness. This morning at 10:30 he died, leaving a widow and one son and two step children. The deceased was a brother to Darrel Porter. He was 57 years of age. The funeral will be held on Tuesday at First Congregational Church of Christ in Pocatello.

A Genealogist’s Objective When Reading an Obituary

Find out who all of these people are and how they are related to your family. If you don’t know the connection, it’s just a matter of finding the details of their lives. If you know the connections, then you will still have to search the same avenues to find the information you need about these people. So how to you go about interpreting this obituary?

Interpreting the Obituary

Many steps can be done online but for the really deep details, you might have to visit archives and libraries in person. Many townships have a genealogist society that will look up this information for you for a small fee that covers any costs that the genealogist will incur on your behalf. If you are lucky, some will do it for free on a voluntary basis while others are employed by the town or library to respond to inquiries like this. Find tools for interpreting an obituary at ObituariesHelp.org

A Checklist for Interpreting an Obituary These are general rules when looking for details to the clues given in obituaries.

Look at a map to determine exactly what city, county and state the deceased lived in.

Check for the Surname, Porter, in online databases or public records from that time period.

Check Census reports from around that time period, if the exact year is not available, look for census reports from before and after, you’ll surely find something in one or the other.

Check for his brothers’ names in the census reports.

Check for other Pocatello newspaper publications that may have more details in the obituary.

Check for newspaper articles about the deceased in the six weeks prior to his death.

Check marriage records. He may have been married twice so check for more than one set of records. Check his widow’s marriage records for both her marriages.

Check cemetery records for Jack and all the other people listed in the obituary and in your findings.

Check the Church Records for births, christenings, marriage, and burial information of the deceased, his wife and his brothers.

Check military records for service and pension records from the National Archives; Jack could have enlisted for service.

Check County Probate records for the deceased and his listed family.

Check for published family histories in County Historical Records.

Contact the Historical or Genealogical Society in Idaho for any information and check their publications for additional details. It is always best to start your research and have some details before going to the historical society, they will help narrow your search but they need as much information as you can give them to find accurate information for you.

Find online chats that are discussing this family. Perhaps there are others looking for the same family and they have different information you do.

Obituaries Are Just the Starting Point

As you dig deeper, you will find more people who share the name or who are connected to the deceased. Keep a list of all the names to research and rule all the ones that don’t apply to your search. The list of people to research will grow if you keep looking. From the obituary of one deceased ancestor, you may find the links to your family history. Just remember to have fun and keep your records organized!

Any Cleaning Company Must to Do It!

Paulo Sousa asked:

Any cleaning company must to do it!

It’s easy to clean a room in your home, but it requires a lot more effort to clean your entire house effectively. You do not need to have high-end equipment, but you do need some tips to make your house cleaning tasks much easier

In cleaning ceramic tile floors, use a simple solution of soap and water.

The trick is to use a rubber scraper - the kind they use at gas stations to clean the window

of your car

You can also find specialty cleaning products that whiten grout and tiles to give your bathroom that sparkling shine.

Another option is:

You do not have to wax… Just sweep and mop on a regular basis and the floors stay clean and shiny. Mop floors with clear water with just a dash of liquid dish soap. Be sure to change the water when it gets cloudy.

Too much soap or dirty water will make floors dull or sticky. Don’t use scrub pads on ceramic tile floors or you might scratch them. Professional cleaners wash most floors by hand, cleaning and drying a small area at a time. House cleaning companies can offer a variety of services for your home such as:

Washing floors

Cleaning kitchen

Cleaning exhaust fans, ducts, filters

Cleaning and sanitizing tabletops and counters

Emptying grease traps

Mopping and waxing floors

Vacuuming all carpeted areas and hard floor areas

Sanitizing bathrooms and kitchen

Disinfecting and polishing sinks, mirrors, toilets, and urinals

Washing internal/external windows

Dusting windows, mini-blinds, air conditioner vents, and wall hangings

Washing floors and kitchen mats

One of the most important services offered by house cleaning companies involves consistent cleaning.

Many professional house cleaning services can also help you prepare parties and organize your home for special occasions. After every comprehensive cleaning, most cleaning companies will leave your home just like new.

There are some spring cleaning chores that need to be done seasonally.

Even though these chores only need to be done once or twice a year, they will help your home look better and run more smoothly.

Are you looking for professional cleaning services that get the job done right the first time? Well, look no further. Trust Cleaning offers you cleaning services for those days when your schedule is too full to fit house cleaning needs in.

Regular cleaning services are available on a weekly or bi-weekly basis at http://www.cleaningwell.com

What is Vocational Training?

Manu Goel asked:

Vocational learning is quite different from taking up a normal college degree. In vocational training a student is taught a specific skill which is traditionally non-academic and totally related to a specific trade, vocation or occupation. It is also known by the name technical education at times. Here the student directly picks up expertise in a particular technique or technology.

Vocational training emphasize on providing specific skills to a trade or industry. Training concentrates on practical experience so that the student secures employment in that field. As such vocational training is quite different from normal education that consists of learning of abstract conceptual knowledge.

Vocational education should start at either secondary or post-secondary level. Further, it can also be interacted with the apprenticeship system. In the American system, vocational education cannot be termed as part of the tertiary education. It does not fall under the traditional definition of a higher education either taking into consideration its own form and syllabus. However, it is increasingly recognized in terms of recognition of prior learning and partial academic credit towards tertiary education. It is more career-orientated and technical rather than being academic.

Vocational education in the US has come a long way to be recognized. In its earlier days mostly automobile mechanic, welder and others undertook vocational training. As such people used to regard it as lower social classes activities. It has come a long way to remove this social stigma and now many high career aspirants undertake vocational training.

The global economy in general has become more competitive and everywhere there is a demand for highly skilled employees. The labor market has becomes more specialized. Sensing this, the Federal government has started investing more money into vocational education organizations that are publicly funded. The cost of apprenticeship and traineeship has also become less so as to encourage vocational education. Post-secondary vocational education is usually provided by a local community college or an institute of technology.

With industries sectors such as retail, information technology, tourism, cosmetics, funeral services and crafts and cottage industries requiring vocationally trained people, the future of vocational education is quite good. In the coming years, vocational education is likely to be diversified into other sectors as well.

Most of the community colleges in the US offer vocational education, though the approach may vary from state to state. Some states also have institutes of technology offering vocational education. These institutes are on an equal accreditation footing with other state universities.

Junior high schools and high schools also pay attention to vocational training though in a very limited way. Some of the vocational courses offered at this level include drafting and auto repair, typing, business courses, wood and metal shop, and home economics. The Federal and state governments have also taken other measures to link academics to work. School to Work is one such initiative that involves spending time at a job site, though without pay.

The Office of Vocational and Adult Education within the US Department of Education makes sure that vocational education is not given a step motherly treatment. Along with the Office of Vocational and Adult Education, it supervises the vocational activities in the US. The Association for Career and Technical Education is the largest private association in the US dedicated to the advancement of vocational education.

Poems for Deceased Friends - How to Get Relief from Grief

Dave Pipitone asked:

Can poems for deceased friends help you grieve better? After all, when a loved one passes away, should you really try to remember them? The answer is yes - your relatives and friends are a part of who you are. You need prayers and compassion of others. You thirst to see your precious friend or family member who has departed living on earth. You wish to understand what she may be experiencing or how he might still be present to you. Missing his or her physical presence is hard to take.

When a spouse, child or friend dies, it seems like your world has come to an end, too. When death happens to those special people, you feel empty and numb. You need a way to deal with the loss as you grieve and mourn. After reflecting upon the death of several of my loved ones and what may have happened to them, I learned a new understanding that provides peace and joy.

When you have a faith-filled hope, grief is much easier to bear when you are mourning. For example. When you believe that a deceased loved one is still connected to God and you, your relationship is changed but not ended. Use a prayer or funeral poem to help you overcome shock of immediate loss. As time goes on, memorial poems help you remember a deceased family member or friend a long time later after they have died.

Many aspects of modern society have programmed people to think that death is the end of everything. Many people are afraid - that everything is unraveling when their loved one dies.

The Christian hope is in Jesus Christ, who rose after death and gives eternal life to those who believe in Him. Jesus promised that he would go ahead to prepare a new home for those who follow Him. Jesus’ promise is hundreds of years old.

Many people are very disturbed when friends and family members die. It is very different than waiting for them to return from a vacation or trip to the grocery store. Routinely, people pose the question, “When will my loved one come home?” The ordeal occurs when they start thinking and believing that their friend or family member one is gone for good and will never, ever return.

The problem is in our imagination and hope. We don’t see that our precious ones may be at home right now — at home in God’s house, that is. We become desperate to see them immediately and want to be reunited with them again soon. So the value of using a prayer and a poem for the deceased is priceless when it helps us to reconnect with our loved ones in love, faith and hope.

What is a new belief that can help us have peace of mind? Think of it this way. Death is like walking through a door of a brand new home. When you push that door open, you see a more beautiful, bigger and happier place to live. It is brand new. Clean. Fresh. More room. More possibilities to do things with your loved ones. A better place to live. So, when you think and dream and imagine deceased loved ones living forever with God and you. What is one of the best places to hang out and live in a new home? In the living room, right? So, think about your departed loved ones moving into the living room of God’s house after they die. They are still living, just in a brighter and wider place.

Your love and friendship with your departed loved ones does not stop overnight when their body stops working. While they were living on this earth, it took time to grow in love, faith and hope. That life does not end when they die. As difficult as it may seem right now, life is actually getting better for them and you. Your loved one is at home with God. You hope to go through the door to meet them some day.

Like a wall hanging that is completed, the tapestry of their human life has been finished. It now hangs in the living room of God’s house. This is a wonderful life that you can celebrated today, tomorrow and forever. All you need to do is use a prayer and poems for deceased friends to remember your connection every day of your life.

Dallas Carpet Cleaning- Guide To Choosing Your Carpet Cleaning Company

Jeff Lester asked:

1. Carpet Cleaning Equipment and Methods - The only type of carpet cleaner you should let in your house should be using the Truck mounted Hot Water Extraction (HWE) method. This really should be your first question, if the answer is “NO”…keep looking. Many Dallas Carpet Cleaning companies use this method…but not all, so make sure you ask. Shaw and Mohawk who combined manufacture over 2/3 of the world’s carpet recommend this method….which makes it easier for me to recommend this without looking like I am simply recommending the method our company happens to use.

The links to Shaw and Mohawk are at the end of the article

2. Carpet Cleaning Certification - Many Dallas Carpet Cleaners have plenty of real world experience, and unfortunately some of their success can be attributed to luck…..”as in” with no real formal in class training they should be lucky they have not ruined any carpet or upholstery. The two most recognized certifications are the IICRC and the RIA (formally the ASCR). This certification proves that the company has been through the coursework and passed exams pertaining to carpet cleaning, ask to see proof that the firm is certified or go to the IICRC web site at www.iicrc.org. This is another situation where the largest carpet manufacturers in the world are recommending the same thing that I recommend. As of January 2008, Shaw Carpet will require homeowners to prove they have had their carpets cleaned by IICRC certified cleaners in order to honor the Shaw warranty.

3. Carpet Cleaning and Pricing - Choosing a Dallas Carpet Cleaner solely based on price will usually come back to haunt you. Not always because of poor quality…but because of the bait and switch. Any cleaner who is offering a $9.95/room special is going to take you to the cleaners…literally. There is not a company in the world who can keep their doors open only charging $9.95/room….it’s just not possible. The low price game can usually be taken out of the decision making equation if the consumer’s first question is question #1 in this article. The $9.95/room bait and switch companies almost NEVER have truck mounted hot water extraction equipment…they simply can’t afford it. Once a consumer starts to narrow down their IICRC certified cleaners that use hot water extraction equipment they will see the bait and switch companies out of the equation.

4. Carpet Cleaner with Insurance and Bonding - Make sure to ask if the company is insured and bonded, almost all Dallas Carpet Cleaning companies are going to say “YES”….so if you are really nervous….ask for a copy. Also keep in mind the difference in General Liability insurance and a Bond. The General Liability insurance will pay if a homeowner was to slip and fall because the carpets were over wetted, a bond will pay if the cleaner was to steal something from the house where they were working. Most homeowners are concerned about the insurance policy paying if the cleaner breaks something in the house, but not all general liability polices will pay in this instance….sometimes a separate endorsement is needed. Here is another scenario to REALLY keep in mind. Most of our insurance policies carry at least a $1000.00 deductible, so even if the cleaner has the offsite breakage endorsement, the policy is not going to pay up when the cleaner breaks a $900 vase. Homeowners really need to consider “Is this cleaner going to pay out of pocket if the $900 vase scenario happens’” Ask how long the cleaner has been in business, they will almost surely pay for any damages if they have been in business for a long time. My advice…put all your expensive breakable things in a place where even a careful carpet tech cannot accidentally break them.

5. Reference of Your Carpet Cleaning company - Do a little homework on the company, ask for references (even ask for references in your neighborhood). Make sure the company is not only a member of the BBB, but also has a good record. There are Dallas Carpet Cleaning companies in our area that amaze me they are still in business, their record at the BBB is so bad it is obvious that all of their new clients do not check them out at www.bbb.org.

6. Cleaning Employees - Make sure to ask if the company uses employees or sub contractors. Ask if a uniformed employee in a lettered company truck will show up to clean your house. There are some Dallas carpet cleaning companies who are really not carpet cleaning companies…they are just marketing companies. They advertise, book the jobs….and sub it out to an independent carpet cleaner. In this situation the actual company who books the job has little if any control over the sub contractor entering your home, if a sub contractor breaks or steals something in your house you may have little recourse.
